MIBK stands for Methyl isobutyl ketone. It is an organic compound with formula (CH3)2CHCH2C(O)CH3. MIBK is a colourless liquid and is used as a solvent for gums, resins, paints, varnishes, etc. It is made from acetone via a three-step process. Unlike other chemical it has quite low solubility in water thus making it useful for liquid-liquid extraction. MIBK has greater stability towards aqueous acid and base. Further, it can be used to extract gold, silver and other precious metals from cyanide solutions.
